How to allow search engines to "follow" links in Mediawiki

Mediawiki by default adds a "nofollow" tag to all the external links. This system is in place to make wikis a less interesting place for spammers, as nofollow links are not going be of any use from SEO point of view. However  this system has been in place for years and even then , spammers continues to put links in wikis.

If a wiki is in completely controlled environment with sufficient spam control mechanisms, links can be set to be followed by search engines for mutual benefits.

It can be done easily by adding the following line to LocalSettings.php file:
$wgNoFollowLinks=false;

One of the advantage of this method is that all the links in wiki can be again turned to "nofollow" simply by removing that line from LocalSettings.php file.
